Today, ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, celebrates an important anniversary, marking a milestone in its journey to building a clean and competitive power system for Europe. Over the past 15 years, ENTSO-E has united 40 electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) from 36 European countries and has been at the forefront of electricity market integration, ensuring the secure and coordinated operation of Europe’s electricity system – the largest interconnected electrical grid worldwide.
Following a long history of cooperation among European transmission operators, ENTSO-E was established in 2009 with the legal mandate to serve the European citizens. Today, the Association keeps playing a central role for TSOs’ cooperation, essential to fulfill the public service mandate of the European TSO community: to power our society and deliver to European consumers a secure and efficient electricity system.
From synchronizing electrical grids across Europe, ENTSO-E continues to play a critical role in Europe’s energy market integration, serving over 500 million European citizens. After the successful emergency synchronization in 2022 of Continental Europe power system with Ukraine and Moldova, this opened the possibility to exchange electricity among the two geographical entities. ENTSO-E is now supporting the upcoming synchronization of Baltic transmission system operators with the European one due for next February.
To commemorate this occasion, ENTSO-E is hosting a high-level conference in Brussels entitled Powering the Sustainable Transition: Grids for a Carbon-Neutral and Competitive Europe. Over 250 policymakers, industry leaders, and key stakeholders will convene to discuss critical challenges and opportunities in Europe’s energy landscape.
“Our dual mission can be translated into two overarching goals: to prepare a power system fit for a carbon-neutral Europe, and in the process, to continue to manage a power system that is secure and efficient, contributing to the security and competitiveness of the Continent,” explains Damian Cortinas, Chair of the Board of ENTSO-E.
The conference will explore pivotal topics including grid security and resilience, supply chain reliability, offshore energy connections, and the transformative role of digital technologies in energy systems. It will also feature three key panels exploring critical aspects of Europe’s energy future, including security and resilience of transmission systems, the role of grids in energy transition, and strategies for securing a competitive and reliable supply chain in Europe.
“It is of utmost importance to work with our stakeholders and partners to build together a secure, reliable and sustainable electricity network,” says Sonya Twohig, Secretary-General of ENTSO-E. “We are committed to serving European consumers and to address the opportunities and the challenges for the electricity network of tomorrow.”
