The ERAA 2021 showed that with planning, coordination and, where necessary, targeted intervention, Europe’s power system can provide secure electricity even in the face of an unprecedented transition.
Among the various challenges, flexibility is increasingly needed for maintaining the balance of demand and production on all time horizons in the face of increasing scale and frequency of fluctuations coming from the Variable Renewable Energy Sources.
In this context, ENTSO-E proactively introduces flexibility metrics to raise awareness on potential future flexibility gaps which might appear due to contemporaneity of demand and supply variability and uncertainty. Both the position paper and the report provide further insights on how TSOs can quantify future flexibility gaps using suitable flexibility metrics related to adequacy scarcities and ramping flexibilities.
