The ENTSO-E Position Paper on the use of internal lead sheathing in power cables describes the current and future availability of alternatives to lead in high voltage and extra-high voltage power cables. A possible restriction or another authorisation process for lead usage in power cables will have an enormous socio-economic impact on the European scale. For instance, it can significantly delay important cable projects needed to reach the EU’s climate neutrality targets by connecting offshore wind farms to onshore.

ENTSO-E would like to emphasize that complete removal of lead used in the manufacturing and repair of power cables will not be possible in the next decade due to the time needed to develop alternative solutions.
