The development of a secure and interconnected power system with high renewable penetration requires the implementation of advanced solutions by TSOs to overcome the technical challenges associated with the stability management in power electronics and hybrid Alternating Current/Direct Current (AC/DC) networks.
Building on the ENTSO-E RDI Roadmap 2020-2030 (Flagship 5), and with the aim of meeting the climate neutrality objectives by 2050, this paper outlines the progress made in the recent years in technological options from power electronics coupled sources to support the future system, most notably in the field of grid forming converters that will ensure the stable operation of interconnected transmission systems with a high penetration of non-synchronous power generation modules.
